Ian MacKaye and Steve Albini are two musicians who have helped sculpt my relationship to music and the world around me. Their music, thoughts, and words have punctuated my life. I first encountered Minor Threat, Embrace, Fugazi, Big Black, Rapeman, and Shellac during my adolescent immersion into the world of Punk and Hardcore, and have remained a steadfast fan of each effort ever since. I’ve seen Shellac and Fugazi more times than I can recall (including what became the latter’s last two dates in 2002). My memories are laced with ecstatic joy.  More than their music, the ideas of these man has inspired me beyond calculation. Their principles for operating toward others, and within a capitalist mechanism, laid the foundation for my own ethic. Over the years I have listened to dozens of interviews by each, but it’s rare to hear their words in conjunction. This two part discussion initiated and mediated by Vish Khanna at Kreative Kontrol is one such rare event. It’s an incredible journey threaded with ideas, memories and first person history. I can’t recommend it enough.
